The Godfather... what's there to say about The Godfather? I bought the Coppola Restoration last week and watched the first GF last night for the first time in like two years. Back then it was my favorite movie, but since then I've watched a million more movies and don't feel the same way.
That being said, I still love it. It just didn't hit me like it did the first dozen or so times I watched it. People call it the ultimate mob movie, but its very different from other mob movies. It's highly romanticized and seductive. Martin Scorsese was very critical of The Godfather and I believe he made Mean Streets as sort of an answer to GF.
I'm never sure if I like part 1 or part 2 better. Part 1 is more "pure" in a sense to me. It doesn't seem to have all that excess that part 2 has(not storywise, but .... everything else-wise). Coppola had to be careful so he couldn't go overboard(think of the tree line bombing in the Ride of the Valkyries scene in Apocalypse Now), but then again, part 2 is much more interesting in how it compares old world savagery with new world savagery and the rise of America. And then, there's Marlon Brando, which ultimately gives part 1 that edge.... but then there's John Cazale who just about steals part 2..... damn, I can never decide.
And then there's part 3, which everyone loves to bash. I don't think it's a bad movie, I enjoy it a lot. I just think Sophia Coppola is so damn ugly. That and I think GF 3 came out at a wrong time. Times had changed, it wasn't the 70s anymore.
Yeah.... watch it.
