So, I basically need a way to catalog all the movies I watch, so thats what this thread is for. So, post what movie you last saw and like Disco said: comment if you're a dork... or something.
The Ice Storm(1997)
I just saw this movie the first time today and on this very initial viewing I'd say I enjoyed it. The synopsis on the Criterion Collection DVD sums it up like this:
Suburban Connecticut, 1973. While the Watergate hearings blast from the TV, the wayward Hood and Carver families try to navigate a Thanksgiving break simmering with unspoken resentments, sexual experimentation, and cultural confusion. With crystalline clarity, characteristic subtlety, and even a dose of wicked humor, Academy Award–winning director Ang Lee adapts Rick Moody's acclaimed novel of American malaise into a trenchant, tragic portrait of lost souls. Featuring a tremendous cast of established actors (Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Sigourney Weaver) and up-and-coming stars (Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, Katie Holmes), The Ice Storm is one of the finest films of the nineties.
It's very similar to other '90s movies. Which is easy to see, as the 90s were all about middle class resentment. Moves like Magnolia, Fight Club, American Beauty, Eyes Wide Shut saw middle class life as being so easy that it all became just a suicidally dull bore. Suburban man suffered for mundane reasons. He didn't know what true horror was.
But then 9/11 came and suddenly there were bigger things to worry about. Suddenly suburbia was a place for "War of the Worlds" and "Cloverfield".
Anyway, The Ice Storm parallels this with the 70s, the Slant Mag review of the film describes this era as a time when the "barreling train of late-'60s
liberation met the brick wall of suburban, conservative adulthood, symbolized by Nixon's face on the television screen"
So, pretty much the movie is an attack on middle class life in the 70s while also showing us the modern world(pre 9/11).
It's very similar to American Beauty, and people like to compare them. Though, I think I very much so hate American Beauty. It's a movie that was good on first viewing but then got repeatedly worse upon consecutive viewings... so I don't watch it anymore. Maybe I'll go into my hate on AB another time, but I think The Ice Storm is a lot better, and I'd recommend it to whoever wants to enjoy a nice, low-key movie.
Err.... anybody else?
