Zelda for Gamecube
Spaceworld 2001

August 23, 2001

I applaud Shigeru Miyamoto for showing the new cell shaded Zelda to the world today, and for taking Zelda in his chosen path and not what he knows the public want. He seemed very shy about showing it at the Pre-Spaceworld press conference and even went as far as asking journalists not to take any photographs or movies of the Zelda footage he was going to show them. I think what Shigeru Miyamoto needs is a good pat on the back for making this move, and the next time I speak to him (if ever) I will tell him he did the right thing.

If anyone has read my older editorials on htloz then you'll know I thought Ocarina of Time could have done with some retro bits from the old 2D Zeldas, that is why I love what Shigeru Miyamoto has done here. He realised that Link had lost his inocence since the first draft of him Shigeru Miyamoto scribbled onto a notebook 15 years ago, so Mr. Miyamoto decided to bring the straying Zelda back home to it's roots: a little kid with alot of courage exploring dark, dangerous dungeons. After all, Mr. Miyamoto's insperation for Zelda was the time he was too scared to enter a cave near his home untill one day he had the courage to enter it equiped only with a lamp.

Making the next Zelda cell shaded also stops destracting  the development team to the graphics and lets them concentrate more on the game. They don't need to spend their time creating complicated textures or bump maping and all the rest, all they have to do now is design and create the enviroments which garantees this Zelda will be bigger than any other before it. I emphasise that this game is not a cartoon but a Japanese form of anime known as chibi.

Exclusive information:
The new Zelda control system

Hyrule: The land of Zelda has been given some information that you wont find anywhere else on the Internet, information on the current controls and what exactly the scenes are that were shown in the Spaceworld footage.

The controls are similar to Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, except R is now the primary button for the bow and maybe some other weapons that are shot like the sling shot and hookshot. The reason these weapons are assigned to R you ask? Because it's analog! You can now use the bow extremely precisely by using the R shoulder button to send arrows as far or as little as you wish.

You can still use Z to target enemies in the Gamecube Zelda but to make battle faster and more furious Nintendo have included a dodge button. Whenever an enemie is about to strike Link the B Icon will appear in the top left and when pressed Link will dodge the enemie's attack. In the Spaceworld footage you can see Link rolling and even jumping over enemie's heads to dodge their attacks!

We're told that the forest area shown in the footage is an overworld area and one dungeon is included in the movie where Link has to sneak into an area Metal Gear Solid Style! Link has to tip-toe passed guards which are equipped with lamps and are searching for Link. How exactly you tip-toe we don't know.

A new feature shown in the spaceworld footage is the enemie's AI. We see Link hiding inside a log while an enemy searches for were link went to.

One last advantage on cell shading: Htloz's flash movies look as good as the games! :)
