Perhaps many of you are wondering
how the Gameshark actually works. That is what this section is
for. Hopefully, you'll be able to understand better how the Gameshark
works and what you can and cannot do with it. Alrighty then,
on with the questions.
What is a
Gameshark?
A gameshark is a cheating
device made by Interact. It plugs into your N64 and then you
put a game on top of it. The gameshark modifies existing code
by forcing specified addresses with a specific number.
What is a
Pro Action Replay?
In the UK, the Gameshark
had a name change. So, the Gameshark and Pro Action Replay are
virtually identical.
What are all
the numbers and letters for?
This is what the gameshark
understands. Actually, it is hexadecimal form, which means that
instead of 10, this becomes A.

Look at this code (I made
it up, so don't try it!) 80547AC-00FF. This actually means 134563756-256.
The hexadecimal form is really just used to save space and time.
Why is there
weird sound?
The Gameshark isn't perfect,
and remember, it isn't licenced or endorsed by Nintendo in any
way. Personally, I think it is the gameshark not executing all
100% of the game code (more like 99.98% in the sound department)
but I don't know exactly.
Game XXXX
doesn't work on my Gameshark.
Some games require a keycode.
You can find most of them on your favorite gameshark code site.
If it still doesn't work, then your gameshark could either be
faulty or not recent enough.
What is the
keycode for Zelda: TOoT:
It is uploaded on all Gamesharks
2.2 and higher. You will not be able to play Zelda if you don't
have a 2.2 or greater, so there is no need to post the keycode
for Zelda: TOoT.
How does a
Gameshark Pro work?
The Gameshark Pro is a
gameshark that has code finding functions. They include a Known
Value search (8 and 16 Bit interchangable) an Unknown Value search,
a Graphic Memory Viewer, and a Memory Editor.
Why won't
the code finder work?
You MUST have the Memory
Expansion Pak in order to have this function work properly. Without
it, the option will not appear. If you do, the game may not like
the Code Finder, and that means you are out of luck. An example
of a Code Finder hater would be Zelda.
May I use
your codes?
Sure! All I ask is a link
to the code bag section and give me (Ultima 9999 and HTLOZ.COM
) the proper credits. You won't need to contact us.
What systems
have a Gameshark?
Super Nintendo (Pro Action
Replay,) Nintendo 64, Playstation, Sega Saturn, and Game Boy/Game
Boy Color.
My saves were
erased! WHY OH WHY???
Some codes tend to erase
saved games on the EEPROM. I suggest either copying your saves
to a memory card, or copy your save to another save slot. Just
so you know, Interact takes no liability in damage to your saves
and such.
Zelda freezes
up often on my GS Pro. Is it broken?
Zelda is a very complicated
game which uses alot of memory and code. The GS Pro has a hard
time keeping up with this, and often crashes. Newer versions
will most likely have better compatbility with Zelda: TOoT.
What is the
port on the back of the Gameshark?
Suppossedly, this little
port could be used to load in codes and possibly updates. Unfortuantly,
it seems like it is vaporware and will stay vaporware. Hey, even
the Quest 64 Sharkbyte was put in Memory Card format.
The game has
an odd effect and won't play correctly anymore after I used my
gameshark. What now?
First, try clearing all
of your data (you may wish to make a game backup using DexDrive,
Gameshark, whatever) and see if the problem clears up. If not,
you may have a real problem on your hands. Try these:
1. Switch the Memory Expansion
Pak with the Jumper Pak. This does work, I used this method when
my Super Smash Brothers became corrupted.
2. Try entering the code
that caused the malfunction again, but instead of number XXXX,
use 0000. Then save.
3. Call the company and
tell them that the game pak is corrupt. Hopefully, the game is
still in warranty.
Do not call Nintendo, because
you violate the warranty agreement when you use your Gameshark
[Pro] you cancel the warranty
Why does the
Gameboy Gameshark not run any Gameboy Color games?
Either your gameshark is
disfunctional, or you don't have a recent enough version. I beleive
the version you must have to run Gameboy Color games is 2.2,
but I am not completly sure. You can't get a free upgrade from
Interact, unfortuantly, but they only cost 20 bucks, so what
the hey.
The friggin
think always gives me a blank screen! Ultima, you are the man,
help me out here!
You may not be using the
correct keycode, your game may not play with GS (i.e you need
a new version.) The possibilities are endless. If you want me
to help you out, be discrete in your problem, and I'll be willing
to lend you my assistance.
